We have vast experience in the design and build of Passive Haus’. They are a construction concept and are strict standards for the energy efficiency for the building which will massively reduce the carbon footprint of the house in comparison to any other conventional home. Passive Haus builds have minute conventional energy requirements for heating or cooling.
How do Passive Haus build work?
Passive Haus’s reuse heat already dispersed to heat the home and maintain a constant temperature. This pre-dispersed heat has already been generated by electrical and gas appliances that are used every day within the home such as ovens, extraction fans, refrigerators, freezers, light bulbs, and televisions. For a build to be a Passive Haus we must ensure that it is insulated to the highest degree and is airtight so that heat cannot dissipate outside the building which is done through the design and installation of outstanding quality doors and windows ensuring the building remains airtight.
To fully achieve a Passive Haus a three-stage process is followed:
- A mechanical ventilation system, with an air-to-air heat recovery component is installed to exchange the fresh outdoor air for the stale air that is inside the house.
- The stale air leaving the house is carrying the pre-dispersed heat from appliances. To ensure the maximum benefit from this heat is gained, it goes through a heat recovery ventilator and transfers this heat to the fresh air entering the house.
- The cool fresh hair enters the heat recovery ventilator and picks up the pre-dissipated heat and goes back into the home warm keeping it heated.
How energy efficient is a Passive Haus?
Energy efficiency of housing is measured in Kilowatt houses per square foot per year (KwH/ft2/yr).
A Passive Haus generally needs just 15kWH of heating per square metre net floor surface per year (15kWh/m2a). If we presume that the Passive Haus build is the size of an average-sized UK home, that’s the equivalent of £50 worth of gas per year. The saving makes a Passive Haus build a great investment.
If we make a comparison to a gas-heated Victorian home this would usually om average, use £300kWh/m2a and spend £1,000 per year.
